OUR INVESTIGATIVE PROCESS

A Two-Pronged Investigative Process

A Two-Pronged Investigative Process

Experience, as is often the case, has taught us we can help you best by adopting a two-pronged approach to the investigative process.

  • First, to develop as much business intelligence about entities as possible.
  • And, second, to follow-up with in-depth, feet-on-the-ground investigations.

In short, each case requires a mix of business intelligence and business investigations.

However, the allocation of resources varies from project to project.  And, with each case, we invariably learn something new.  Understandably, the availability of reliable company data undergoes constant change, depending on a country’s current government policy and attitudes to personal data and data transparency.

Thus, information that was available ten years ago, is now restricted.   Similarly, much more information is now hidden behind paywalls, thereby increasing costs.  As a result, Veriton’s methods are subject to constant change but the underlying investigative process remains the same.

BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE : WHAT IS IT?

Within the investigations industry, business intelligence refers to the collection, collation and examination of available data into a comprehensive actionable report.  This assists the client to make sound business decisions. In other words, it is, by popular definition, “getting the right information to the right people at the right time”.

At long last, technology has turned the stereotype of the shady PI on its head. Nowadays, professional contemporary investigative work is underpinned by developing and using quality investigative methodologies.  For instance, by increasing our use of link analysis charts in our work.

In 9 out of 10 cases, we begin projects by compiling, collating and analysing data.  Before we prepare a proposal, we always look at what information the client has and what we can quickly find on the Internet.

And as for the right time to start?  It’s now! If you are reading this then you probably have already considered engaging professional help.

In almost any circumstance—from fraud to investigative due diligence—the earlier we are approached, the better the result.

Importance of starting investigations early

THE ROLE OF THE PI IN THE BUSINESS INVESTIGATIVE PROCESS

Why hire a private investigation agency from Day 1?

Investigative Process: Why Use a PI for both Research & Investigations

Investigative Process: Why Use a PI for both Research & Investigations

If much initial research work can be conducted via a  desktop computer, then what are the benefits of coming to Veriton  Investigations early on?

EXPERIENCE & SAVINGS: To begin with, we have vast experience in investigating individuals and companies worldwide.  After so many years, we know the best online sources to use and have access to relevant proprietary databases.

WASTED TIME RE-CHECKING: If you come to us to conduct the initial work, our combined research and investigations experience allows you to reduce both budget and turn-around-time.

Some clients have come to Veriton having “completed” all preliminary research.  The clients then ask us to conduct on-site investigations based on their information.  Of course, this is acceptable to us.

AVOIDING DUPLICATED CHECKS: However, on multiple occasions the information we have received has been inaccurate. As a result, the client has had to review preliminary findings or, as often happens, ask us to conduct additional research and verification checks.

In this kind of situation, the client does not have a “feel-good-factor” from the get-go and our investigators cane arrive at a case “cold”.

TYPICAL RECHECK EXAMPLE: We often receive names and addresses that are incomplete.  In SE Asian cultures—the name of a person or a company—may have multiple forms and spellings.

Without exception, conducting physical investigations with incomplete facts increases client costs.

Importance of Accuracy in Pre-Investigation Work

Importance of Accuracy in Pre-Investigation Work

In many ways, the success of what may be considered as the more traditional roles of a private investigator—such as making site visits or making discreet enquiries—depends on the quality of the initial research.  It is often quicker for us when we do fact-checking ourselves.

It is critical to the success of the investigation that first findings are thoroughly documented and understood.

At the end of the day, we want the client to achieve desired goals.

Customer satisfaction is the bedrock of Veriton Investigations.

We offer a customized service throughout the full investigative process.

From the initial planning stages and deciding how best to meet your budget to investigations and final reporting, our goal is to get you the information you need.

Our first task is to understand your end goals.  What do you want to achieve? Are there special areas you want to know more about?

In the first instance, we can have an online face-to-face meeting no matter where in the world you are located.

Perhaps surprisingly, some of our clients’ desired outcomes are not always clear in the first instance.  We can help you to narrow the scope of your requirements.

Based on our experience of hundreds of projects, where possible we adopt a phased approach. This minimises your cost and increases project efficiency.

Typically, Phase 1 involves the collection and collation of all information to ensure everyone has a clear picture. At this stage, we may initiate minor investigations if there are any anomalies.

In drawing up a clear Phase 2 project plan, we might recommend further research, investigations and, if necessary, surveillance.

This allows you to reassess deliverables as your project progresses and better plan budget.

We have a team of multi-lingual researchers.

Between them, they speak English, Cantonese, Putonghua (Mandarin), Chiu Chow, French, a smattering of Italian and a little Spanish!

They can read and write Chinese in both Traditional and Simplified characters.

Veriton has experience in examining thousands of corporate documents for the purposes of anything from a background check to large scale fraud investigations.

Research includes everything from the analysis of standard business returns and contracts to complex projects that require the development of custom databases.

One such example was the analysis of thousands of pages of telephone records for a fraud case.

Another was the compilation and interpretation of hundreds of bills of lading and airway bills.  These were in connection with the illegal wildlife trade.

Note: We are not, however, forensic document examiners.

We consider information as knowledge in its raw form. Intelligence is the product of collating, examining, analyzing, testing and evaluating raw information.

The sources of raw information are many and varied.  These include anything from corporate records and surveillance photographs to phone calls lists and car registration numbers.

The end product, which is intelligence, is used to make informed business decisions.

The intelligence product is usually provided to to the client in a comprehensive report.

Once we are satisfied that initial desktop research has yielded as much as possible, it’s time to deploy boots-on-the-ground.

This may be either investigators, surveillance or a mixture of the two depending on the case.

Our investigators and surveillance team exercise discretion at all times.

Note: Sometimes the client’s goals can be achieved without on-the-ground activities.  This is always an added bonus for the client in terms of budget and TAT.

During the project we begin writing a comprehensive report that is compiled from all research and investigative findings.

Often, especially for complex enquiries, we chart the links found within the investigation. This helps in the understanding of what has happened and how the entities are related.

For long-term cases, we keep clients updated with regular reviews. We immediately flag significant findings—especially those that could change the direction of an investigation.
